Letter: Home builders should pay more for growth

Fri, Mar 7, 1997 (11:59 a.m.)

We are equally excited about the fact that the Home Builders Association has also stepped up to the plate and wants to contribute to infrastructure costs by increasing their permit fees $500 for each new single family home, apartment unit, condos, etc. We applaud them for their proposal.

Again, we are sure this is a misprint, since their present shortfall for infrastructure is at least $50,000 per unit. They should contribute the $50,000 per unit. Had they done this last year, their total fair-share permit fees would have provided us with an additional $150 million. This sounds about right. We go along with that and a 10 percent increase each year thereafter until we take a breather to stop this zoo for transients, 6,000 in and 3,000 leave each month. As for the $2 billion, poorly proposed, private monorail that is an off-the-shelf, ultra-light, computer controlle,d individual four-seat vehicle with off-line and express capabilities, for the people at one-tenth the cost, then I say, let's talk.
