Letter: Water officials must be candid about pollution issues

Sat, Mar 8, 1997 (11:59 a.m.)

Being a regular boater and user of the lake mainly fishing, let's get down to the crux of this letter. On page eight one paragraph really shook me -- "The bacteria and chlorophyl cause the greatest worries because they could force officials to ban swimming and boating in the lake this summer if algae growing there begins producing toxins." What is this? Shop talk, gossip, hearsay, do officials mean it?

Just imagine shutting down Lake Mead this summer to boaters, swimmers, fishermen, skiers, campers and others all due to a mystery "plume."
