Rain forced cancellation of the final 18 holes, depriving the UNLV golf team at last shot at winning the Golf Digest Invitational in Houston.
The Rebels, who shot 298-291 -- 589 for the tournament on the par-72, 7,018-yard TPC Woodlans course, finished one stroke behind New Mexico Sunday for their third second-place finish of the season. Clemson placed third while Houston, Texas Christian and Arizona State tied for fourth.
UNLV was led by Ted Oh and Bill Lunde who shot 2-over-par 146s -- good enough to tie for eighth place. The Rebels' Jeremy Anderson carded a 147, Mike Ruiz a 152 and Gilberto Morales a 153.
The Rebels' next meet is at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, March 24-25.
Softball team sweeps
The UNLV women's softball improved its Western Athletic Conference record to 6-2 with 2-0 and 5-2 victories at Tulsa. Centerfielder Nicole Miller was the hitting star for the Rebels, going 5 for 9 in the doubleheader. UNLV has an 11-8 overall record.
Women netters win
The 23rd-ranked UNLV women's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine matches Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Oregon on the Rebels' courts.
The Lady Rebels, 7-0 at home this spring, won five of six singles matches and took two of the three doubles. UNLV's Marianne Vallin improved to 25-7 on the year with a straight set win over Andrea Petrovic at the top singles spot. Other Rebel winners were Gee Gee Garvin, Veronica Goude, Lis Annebro and Marie Linusson.
