Even the city of North Las Vegas needs the proper permits before it starts building.

The city appeared before its Planning Commission Wednesday, asking the members to approve a special use permit to allow a recreation center in an area zoned residential.

Not surprisingly, the papers were all in order and the plan had the blessing of the city planning staff.

Before voting on the item, Commissioner Tom Langford asked, "Can I question the representative?" drawing a laugh when no one approached the podium.

The city did receive a waiver on design guidelines that require state buildings on corner lots to face the street.

The recreation center has been designed by HSA Architects to be angled at Alexander Road and Allen Lane to give it a more distinctive look and allow more room for parking.

The project will be 41,000 square feet, including the center and a swimming pool, and cost $7.8 million. It is expected to be completed by early 2002.
