TRPA head already looking out for lake

Juan Palma's appointment book is filling up even if his book shelves and desk remain empty. He's meeting with employees, planners and the public.

Palma is a former Lake Tahoe Basin forest supervisor who was selected from 65 applicants for the $110,000-a-year top post in the bi-state agency.

He said a few issues already are commanding his attention, starting with filling the vacancy in the deputy director's post.

After hiring an assistant, he hopes to rearrange the managerial rankings to make the agency run more efficiently.

And his return to the lake isn't all work.

"My boys already have passes to Heavenly," he said. "And I'm looking forward to doing some snowboarding too."
