Anti-gambling activists collecting signatures

SALEM, Ore. -- Anti-gambling activists plan to begin collecting signatures soon for a ballot measure to prohibit the Oregon Lottery from adding slot machine-style games to its video poker terminals.

They also have plans to lobby against any move by the Legislature to expand Lottery games as a way to ease the state's budget crunch when lawmakers meet in a special session early next year.

The chief petitioner for the anti-slot measure said dozens of volunteers will begin collecting signatures in the next few days in hopes of placing the issue before Oregon voters in November 2002.
