Several educational events are planned

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is offering these free hikes and walks with reservations: Tales of the Southwest: Program on Wednesday weaves American Indian and pioneer stories of the Red Rock Canyon and the Southwest. No hike involved.

Great, Grinding Gravel: Two-mile moderately easy hike Friday for ages 8 to adult will explore Kyle Canyon. Meet at the Mount Charleston Hotel parking lot.

Life in the Canyons: Moderate three mile walk Saturday will bring facets of canyon ecology together in one program. This is a great orientation hike for newcomers.

Trouble in Red Rock: Volunteer "Cactus" Jack will lead hikers up a rock climber's trail Sunday in Juniper Canyon while telling of how rescue team members pluck stranded hikers out of trouble. Meet at the Pine Creek parking lot.

Essence of Water: One-mile moderate walk Sunday for ages 12 to adult to look for changes in the vegetation from desert to shady canyon.

Several locations to host drive

United Blood Services, 6930 W. Charleston Blvd., has scheduled blood drives at these locations:

Today: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Nevada Care Health Insurance and 2:30-7:30 p.m. at Cunningham Elementary School.

Wednesday: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Stardust; 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Boyd Gaming Corp., 2950 S. Industrial Road and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Gold Coast.

Thursday: 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at O'Callaghan Federal Hospital, 4700 Las Vegas Blvd. North, and 2:30-7:30 p.m. at Bowler Elementary school, 1425 W. Whipple.

Friday: 3-8 p.m. at United Parcel Service, 740 N. Martin L. King and 2-6 p.m. at French Elementary School, 3235 E. Hacienda Ave.

Saturday: 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Mountain View Seventh Day Adventist, 6001 W. Oakey Blvd.

Monday: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. at PSI Seminars, 4001 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 33.

CCSN prepares for sixth annual event

Wine, spirits, hors d'oeuvres, art, jazz and a silent auction will highlight Community College of Southern Nevada's sixth annual wine tasting to be held 7-11 p.m. Saturday in the June Whitley Student Center on the CCSN campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

Proceeds will go to several scholarship programs. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. No one under 21 will be admitted. For more information, call 651-4440.

Immunizations

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of three public health centers and 15 satellite clinics. These clinics will be open Wednesday through Jan. 30:

DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EAST LAS VEGAS WIC OFFICE: 5701 Missouri Ave., 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Wednesday.

DESERT BREEZE CLINIC: 8275 Spring Mountain Road, noon-4 p.m. Friday.

FREMONT MEDICAL CLINIC: 4880 S. Wynn Road, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Immunizations free to anyone who walks in.
