Letter: Mass transit scheme needs to be rethought

Thu, Jan 3, 2002 (8:42 a.m.)

Who does the thinking and planning for the Regional Transportation Commission?

Now they want to increase the fares for the paratransit riders -- the disabled! No doubt added funds are needed. How about considering more riders?

The restrictions imposed on who can and cannot take advantage of the paratransit is, and has always been, sad. It is so obvious that Las Vegas has many, many seniors who, because their maladies are not bad enough, cannot ride.

As for the regular CAT routes, I thought California's transit system was poor. Las Vegas rates much worse. If more routes and frequencies were available, no doubt more residents could take this bus.

Mayor Oscar Goodman is working so hard to improve downtown. How are the slightly disabled, the aged seniors and people on routes that do not go downtown, going to get there?

It really is time for a rethinking of the poor service instead of raising rates and cutting out service.

Would this be called quantity vs. quality?
