Union mechanics reject latest contract offer

DALLAS -- Southwest Airlines and its union mechanics said Monday they would ask federal mediators to help settle a stalemate in contract talks.

Southwest's 1,300 mechanics, represented by the Teamsters union, voted 98 percent against the airline's last offer a month ago.

The company had offered annual pay raises ranging up to about 3 percent for senior employees, with smaller raises for newer workers. Since then, both sides had continued negotiating but had not exchanged new proposals, according to representatives of both sides.
