Election 2002: County Assessor

Thu, Oct 17, 2002 (10:42 a.m.)

Republican Jonathan Galaviz seeks to unseat Democrat incumbent Mark W. Schofield as county assessor, whose office determines the valuation of property for tax purposes.

Galaviz, a business technology professional who belongs to several nonprofit boards for equal opportunity for low-income people, proposes a property tax rebate and exemption program to help low-income people own homes.

The Republican also proposes first-year exemptions for teachers, firefighters, police officers, entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

Schofield has served two elected terms, after being appointed to fill an unfinished term in 1993. In 1997 under his leadership, the assessor's office was awarded the International Association of Assessing Officers Distinguished Jurisdiction Award. Schofield is currently chairman of the Nevada Assessors Association Legislative Committee.

Schofield's platform is based on continuing the department's level of service.
