Election 2002: County Commission District E

Thu, Oct 17, 2002 (11:13 a.m.)

In the primary, incumbent Myrna Williams knocked off fellow Democrat Nevada Stupak, considered to be her greatest threat to retain her County Commission seat.

Williams, 73, vying for her third four-year term, has remained popular in her commission district -- made up mostly of elderly residents -- because of her work on the Cambridge Community Center.

Williams said midterm that she likely wouldn't run for re-election, but changed her mind to see projects through and continue to take the lead in the county's fight against a Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump.

She faces John Stanhagen, a 70-year-old Republican. Stanhagen is a former University of Southern California professor.

Stanhagen hopes to secure a commission seat to help curb growth, limit the changes of taxable value and do away with inappropriate taxes.
