Letter: Leaving dogs tied in yard is cruel

Tue, Aug 26, 2003 (9:56 a.m.)

"I wish someone would tell me what it is that I've done wrong. Why do I have to stay chained up and left alone? They seemed so glad to have me when I came here as a pup. But now the master "hasn't time" and the mistress says I shed. The children never walk me, yet I wish that I could please them. All I have to give is love. I wish they would explain why they said they wanted me and then left me on a chain."

Solitary confinement on a chain is very cruel for dogs. They are pack animals who crave companionship. Scratches behind the ears, games of fetch, or walks around the block mean the world to them. Curling up at your feet while you watch TV is their idea of heaven.

Dogs don't want much -- just you.
