San Diego State fires blanks at UNLV

Mon, May 5, 2003 (9:44 a.m.)

The 18th-ranked UNLV baseball team suffered its first shutout of the season, falling 3-0 to host San Diego State Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops the Rebels to 37-13, 20-4 in Mountain West Conference play. They now hold a four-game lead in the conference standings with six to play. The Aztecs improve to 22-26, 14-10 in league play.

After putting together a 15-run, 21-hit performance on Saturday, UNLV could manage only three hits in Sunday's game. Junior third baseman Brent Johnson contributed two hits, both doubles, giving him 16 on the season and 66 in his three-year career. His total ties the school record for career doubles set by Bill Max, who played from 1978-81. UNLV continues its six-game road swing with a three-game series at New Mexico beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
