The $20.1 million widening of part of St. Rose Parkway in Henderson began last week and is expected to be completed by May 2004, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said.

The parkway will be widened from Interstate 15 to Interstate 215. During construction, drivers may encounter lane shifts, but overall the work is not expected to greatly affect traffic, department spokesman Robert McKenzie said.

For the latest information on the construction, McKenzie said people should look at the department's website (nvroads.com] or listen to 1610 AM.

The parkway will be turned into four lanes from I-15 to Gilespie Street; six lanes from Gilespie to Seven Hills Drive/Spencer Street; and eight lanes from Seven Hills/Spencer to Coronado Center Drive. It will be widened to six lanes from Coronado Drive to I-215.

In the first phase construction will include new westbound lanes of St. Rose Parkway from Las Vegas Boulevard to just west of Paseo Verde.

Phase 2 will include the construction of sidewalks, curbs and gutters at the intersection with Eastern Avenue.

Phase 3 will include building additional new lanes from Las Vegas Boulevard to just south of I-215.

Phase 4 will include improvements to Las Vegas Boulevard around the intersection with the parkway.
