Former junior middleweight and middleweight world champion Mike McCallum of Las Vegas is one of 16 inductees in the International Boxing Hall of Fame's class of 2003, which will be honored June 8 in Canastota, N.Y.
Besides McCallum, four other fighters will be cited from the "modern" era, and six others were selected as "old-timers" or "pioneers" and another five qualified as "nonparticipants" or "observers."
Joining McCallum -- who was 49-5-1 with 36 knockouts -- as the modern-era inductees will be George Foreman, Fred Apostoli, Curtis Cokes and Nicolino Locche. Foreman was a two-time heavyweight champion who finished his career with a record of 76-5; Apostoli was a middleweight who was 61-10-1; Cokes was a welterweight who was 62-14-4; and Locche was a lightweight who was 117-4-14.
The old-timers era selections: Battling Battalino, a featherweight who was 57-26-3; Louis "Kid" Kaplan, a featherweight who was 108-17-13; Tom Sharkey, a heavyweight who was 40-6-3; Jess Willard, a heavyweight who was 28-6-1; Caleb Baldwin, a lightweight from Great Britain; and Joe Goss, an early heavyweight champion.
The non-participants: promoter Dan Duva, booking agent Dewy Fragetta, matchmaker Al Weill, journalist Jack Fiske and author Bud Schulberg.
