TRENTON, N.J. -- The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey will soon assume direct management of $100,000 in state funds that are earmarked for the treatment of compulsive gamblers.
The state now allocates about $650,000 to treat compulsive gamblers, and it was not clear when the council would take control of the funds.
Edward Looney, the council's executive director, said he would meet next week with therapists who run eight gambling treatment programs in the state. The council now helps about 3,000 to 4,000 gamblers find help for their addiction.
