Hughes Network Systems, a division of Hughes Electronics, on Tuesday opened a backup satellite operations center in North Las Vegas.

The center, which has nine employees and required about $7 million to develop, will support Hughes' Spaceway satellite communications network. The center is at 1 Aerojet Way, near Craig and Losee roads.

The company had considered placing the Spaceway headquarters, an estimated $24 million project, in Henderson but eventually decided to place it in Maryland.

Hughes plans to offer Spaceway satellite broadband service to customers next year. Hughes Electronics is the owner of the satellite cable TV provider DIRECTV. Hughes Network Systems is the leading manufacturer of DIRECTV receivers.
