PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Support is growing for a casino built by the Narragansett Indians, according to a new Brown University poll.
Five in 10 registered voters who responded to the statewide survey released Wednesday would approve a casino in West Warwick for the tribe. Fewer than four in 10 would oppose such a project, with less than two in 10 unsure how they would vote.
The narrow majority supporting a casino is a slight increase over results from a June, 1999 Brown poll, which showed just under five in 10 voters backed the tribe's proposal for a casino. Four in 10 voters surveyed in that poll had said they opposed the project.
