LV trash hauler’s profit soars

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Republic Services Inc., the third-largest U.S. trash hauler and the dominant garbage collector in Las Vegas, Wednesday said first-quarter net income more than tripled as collections rose. The company also said it plans to double its dividend payment to 12 cents a share.

First-quarter net income rose to $56.9 million, or 36 cents a share, from $16.8 million, or 10 cents, in the year-earlier period, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Revenue rose 7.2 percent to $637.3 million.
