Otton to coach UNLV QBs

Until about two weeks ago Brad Otton was the answer to a USC football trivia question.

That question? Who was the last player to quarterback USC to a Rose Bowl win?

Until Matt Leinart and company led the Trojans to a share of the national title with a 28-14 win against Michigan on New Year's Day, Otton had that destinction, having directed John Robinson's squad to a 41-32 win against Northwestern in the 1996 Rose Bowl.

Now Otton, who spent the 2003 season as director of football operations for the Rebels, will be coaching quarterbacks for Robinson at UNLV. It was announced on Monday that Otton will replace Vince Alcalde, who left the program in December after two seasons.

Otton was a quarterbacks and tight ends coach at Santa Barbara City College in 2002 and coached quarterbacks at Cal State Northridge in 2001 before that school decided to drop football.

"Brad Otton is one of the young, bright people in the field," Robinson said. "His background suits us well for what we need."

UNLV also officially announced that Las Vegas High School coach Kris Cinkovich, as reported in the Sun last week, had joined the staff as wide receivers coach. Cinkovich, 43, replaces Garrick McGee, who left last month for a similar position at Northwestern.
