School Board extends contract for financial officer

The Clark County School Board voted unanimously Thursday to extend its chief financial officer's contract by three years.

Walt Rulffes, deputy superintendent of operations, earns $137,150 annually. He declined the 2 percent cost-of-living increase funded by the state.

"I think my salary is fair at its current level," Rulffes said.

Rulffes, who has been with the district for seven years, said he did ask for, and receive, a deferred benefit already offered to other employees per state statute. Over the course of his tenure with the district Rulffes will be allowed to convert up to 60 unused sick days to retirement credits.

Rulffes received a substantial raise more than three years ago when Clark County School District officials learned he was being wooed by other organizations.

Rulffes is a "strong asset," said School Board member Sheila Moulton.
