Letter: Pledge phrase proves divisive

Tue, Jun 29, 2004 (8:33 a.m.)

In F. Jay Harrell's June 25 letter, he said that if 10 percent of the population is offended by "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, "so be it."

I wonder, if the pledge had the words "under Allah" instead, would Mr. Harrell be offended?

The Pledge of Allegiance is supposed to be for "one nation, indivisible ..." Presently, as Mr. Harrell pointed out, it's divisible. Were the pledge returned to what it was before, it would again be a uniting statement.
