Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

The Las Vegas Country Club's recent Labor Day Member-Member Golf Tournament was blessed with lovely weather and a course in terrific shape.

Format for the three-day event was: Saturday's play was Chapman Scotch Foursome, with 40 percent of combined handicaps deducted from total score. This is where both partners hit a tee shot on each hole, hit each other's second shot, choose the second shot they prefer and then hit alternate shots until that ball is holed. Sunday's play was Better Ball of Partners with 90 percent of handicap; with Monday's play being Combined Net of Partners, with full handicaps deducted from gross scores. As there were both gross and net flights, gross scores are listed first.

The popular pairing of Charlie Pape and Jim Hagen, who shot a 282, won First Flight honors, with the J.P. Oberweis/Bob Frusco duo placing second at 285. Net honors went to Val Miller and Wayne Corona and their 274, followed by Mike Pizzolla and Bill Fain. Their score was 276.

Second Flight victors with 279 were Lance Wallin and Mike Singer, while in the runner-up spot at 287 was the Todd Terry/Jason Ernest team. Low net went to Glenn Raynes and Joe Del Grosso with 287. Just one stroke back at 288 was Marcus Erling and Russ Schroeder.

The Paul Nelson/Peter Fischer pairing won the Third Flight with 279, while Ron Johnson and George Levine garnered second at 284. Net winner at 283 was the Don Dombrowski/Alan Green twosome, and they were followed by Larry Paluzzi and Michael Parish at 288.

Chad Plaire and Hugh Merriman cruised to an easy victory in the Fourth Flight, coming in with 277. Second at 307 was the Randy Boesch/Don Mackay duo. Net victors with 273 were Benet Hudson and Dick Colquitt. Sharing second place with 283's were the pairings of Paul Schofield/Dom Cambeiro and Ken Land/Jerry Bartman.

Fifth flight victors on the strength of their 285 were Ray Demman and his heir, R.J. Demman. B.J. Balaban and Bob Winner followed with 291. Net honors were won by the Don Pitchford/Rene Blanchard team. Their score was 289.

Norval Jessogne paired with Jack Vergiels to win Sixth Flight honors with 298. The teams of Ron Pease/Emilio Muscelli and Dick Taggart/Ron Radcliffe shared second place at 301. Charles Ebert and Mort Davis at 299 won the net segment quite handily over the twosome of John Moehrle and John Hunt whose score was 309.

Winning honors for the ladies were Rene Raynes and Halina Vergiels and their 282. Pat Corona and Charlotte Ashworth placed second with 292. Net victors at 283 was the Lori Oberweis/Carol Hanson pairing, followed by Sandy Singer and Tammy Gephardt who came in with 292.

However, neither Charlie Pape nor Jerry Bartman were fazed by the challenge during the tournament as both men aced the hole, Pape with a 6-iron and Bartman with a 7-wood.
