RENO -- The Golden Phoenix Hotel Casino and Resort could follow other downtown Reno properties in converting to condominiums.

A developer has applied for a permit to renovate the 604-room hotel into 388 residential units with commercial space and a health club.

The permit application says the condos would cost an average of $350,000.

The former Comstock and Sundowner hotel casinos are currently undergoing similar conversions.

City Manager Charles McNeely said the trend is meeting a real estate demand for more people who want to live downtown.

Besides the hotel renovations, several other condominium projects are in the works along the Truckee River.
