Avalanche watch in effect

Wed, Jan 5, 2005 (9:07 a.m.)

The U.S. Forest Service extended its extreme avalanche warning in effect for Kyle and Lee Canyons as well as the backcountry areas of the Spring Mountains through today.

The service urged skiers, sledders and snowboarders to stay out of the area.

The warning does not include the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, district ranger Tim Short said.

Snowfall above the 7,000-foot level at Mount Charleston was recorded at 41 inches, but there are pockets of deeper, unstable snow.

The Las Vegas office of the Forest Service is not equipped to monitor avalanches in the backcountry on a daily basis, Short said.
