LV pub plans vigil Thursday

Tue, Jul 12, 2005 (9:40 a.m.)

A vigil will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Crown & Anchor British Pub, 1350 E. Tropicana Ave., to honor those who died and were injured in Thursday's bombings of mass transit systems in London.

"The vigil in London will be held at 1 p.m. their time, but that is not practical for us," said June LeMay, manager of the bar and restaurant near Maryland Parkway that is popular with transplanted Brits and descendants of those from the United Kingdom.

"So we decided to hold our vigil at 1 p.m. our time. It is a means for us all to be together and remember."

The brief ceremony will include two minutes of silence, LeMay said.

The bar also is taking up a collection for the British Red Cross. To date, $200 has been raised by passing the hat among employees and a few patrons, LeMay said.

Also, she said, one unidentified man came into the bar over the weekend with flowers that are being displayed there in memory of his 8-year-old niece, who he said was killed in the attacks that took more than 50 lives and injured hundreds.

Bar patrons also are being asked to sign a condolence book that will be sent to London with the donations and other well wishes from Las Vegas.
