Professor: Slots in Florida could hurt Kentucky horse industry

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The installation of slot machines in Florida's Broward County could adversely affect Calder Race Course in Miami, as well as racing and breeding interests throughout Kentucky, according to one University of Louisville professor.

Richard Thalheimer, an economics professor in the school's equine business department, said slot machines at Gulfstream Park in Broward will hurt Calder's operations, even though the two tracks race at different times of the year.

"It's going to have a serious, major impact on on-track revenue at Calder," Thalheimer said.
