Panel OKs smaller Board of Regents

Wed, Mar 16, 2005 (9:50 a.m.)

A Nevada constitutional amendment to restructure the university Board of Regents into a smaller, predominantly appointed board will go to the Assembly floor.

The Assembly Elections, Procedures, Ethics and Constitutional Amendments Committee unanimously passed the amendment of Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, during a workshop hearing Tuesday afternoon.

The amendment would reduce the 13-member elected board to nine and call for six of those spots to be appointed by the governor. The other three spots would be elected based on state congressional districts.

The amendment passed the Assembly by a 26-16 vote and the Senate by an 11-10 vote in 2003. It must pass again this session and then go to voters in 2006 to become law.
