Lawmakers consider how to tax slot machines

Thu, Mar 17, 2005 (10:20 a.m.)

State lawmakers who will determine how to tax slot machines in Broward County listened to more testimony Wednesday -- and heard recommendations ranging from a 20 percent tax to a 50 percent tax.

Any taxes on the revenue from the slots, which voters have approved for four tracks and jai-alai frontons in Broward, are supposed to be dedicated to schools statewide.

The Senate Regulated Industries Committee hasn't yet considered a bill but state Sen. Steve Geller, D-Hallandale, has proposed a 30 percent tax rate. That's also the rate proposed by the industry. Gambling opponents have said they want a higher tax.
