Letter: Take the hyphen out of being American

Sun, Apr 30, 2006 (7:20 a.m.)

This is in response to Juanita Campos' April 23 letter, "Immigration rhetoric taking its toll," about her sons asking her about people hating Mexicans. It's a shame that people who are here illegally are causing children to be hurt and upset.

Please, Ms. Campos, tell your fourth-generation American sons that no one hates Mexicans - legal or illegal. The problem Americans have is with criminals who are here using non-valid Social Security numbers, sending big bucks "home," not paying federal income taxes, using up tax-supported programs (schools, health, etc.), bragging about being "Mexican," and desiring to make America into Mexico al Norte. If Mexico is that great, why don't they stay "home?"

I am a fourth-generation American and not a Norwegian-German-French-Lithuanian-Czechoslovakian-American. My ancestors waited their turn to come here, learned the language, became citizens and assimilated.
