Flashpoint for Feb. 13, 2006

Mon, Feb 13, 2006 (12:32 p.m.)

Things have been going swimmingly for Rep. Jim Gibbons for quite some time now. He has skillfully avoided any debates and any public gaffes since he pilfered a state auditor's speech last year. Chancellor Jim Rogers has been muffled by Gibbons' genuflecting in private suck-up sessions. And the congressman continues to lead in the polls and the money race - an almost unbeatable combination. Then along comes the national media last week with a couple of stories - a six-degrees-of-separation Abramoff story about Gibbons and one closer to home implying the congressman might have had a whistleblower fired. The infernal media will do anything to create a race.
