FLASHPOINT for Apr 12, 2007

Thu, Apr 12, 2007 (7:29 a.m.)

When you are politically active and have deep pockets, there will always be rumors. And some people know how to knock down rumors, as opposed to giving them life - as Gov. Jim Gibbons did recently by offering the conspiracy theory about state Democrats paying a national newspaper to sully him. Chancellor Jim Rogers heard a rumor and decided this week to pen a memo saying it was nonsense. The rumor was that he was going to fund a recall of the governor. "I would never consider taking such a highly charged political position ..." Rogers wrote to the regents. But never is a long time isn't it, chancellor? My guess is never just might arrive in a few weeks - right after Gibbons decides to slash the university system's budget.
