Letter: Reductions in budget increases are not cuts

Wed, Apr 25, 2007 (7:08 a.m.)

Why do the state agencies and media keep calling the reduction in budget increases budget cuts?

What Gov. Jim Gibbons is asking for is that everyone share in the revenue reduction by scaling back their requests for increases in their budgets.

Hey, if you ask your boss for a $50-a-month raise and he gives you a $25 raise, is that a reduction of your salary? I think not. When I went to school, that was not a salary reduction, but simply a smaller raise than requested. I guess I'll just have to buy a smaller boat or car or motor home or ...

Let's state the facts correctly: reduced budget increases , not budget cuts. Calling the reductions budget cuts is a political statement designed to gain sympathy and public support , and bash the governor.
