Letter: Medically indigent deserve better care

Sat, Jan 20, 2007 (7:11 a.m.)

The time has come for the Nevada Legislature to force the corporate hospitals in Las Vegas to help Clark County pay for the treatment of the medically indigent and uninsured. The one law in force to accomplish this feat is ignored and has no bite.

The Legislature should levy a "privilege" tax on the large corporate hospitals. The money from this tax must be earmarked for Clark County and University Medical Center. This is the only way the fat cats will help pay for the medically indigent.

In the interest of disclosure, I am a clinical laboratory technologist and a former UMC employee.

Before people start screaming "illegal immigrants," they should remember that if they ever lose their jobs, they may be without insurance and become medically indigent.
