Neighbors evacuated in overnight police standoff

Sun, Aug 3, 2008 (7:51 a.m.)

Several residents in a North Las Vegas neighborhood had to evacuate their homes late Saturday night as police held a standoff with an armed man who had barricaded himself in a home.

However, no one was injured in the incident and residents were allowed to return to their homes early this morning, according to North Las Vegas police.

Police said the incident began about 9:25 p.m. when officers were called to a residence in the 2800 block of Taylor Street about a 31-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside a family member's home.

Officers said when they arrived they learned the man was very distraught, was threatening to shoot at them and burn the house down. For that reason, officers began evacuating those in the neighborhood.

After negotiations failed, the North Las Vegas SWAT team was brought in. The man surrendered to SWAT officers at 11:56 p.m., police said. The man's name has not been released by police.
