Las Vegas man dies in three-vehicle crash

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 (3:52 p.m.)

A 29-year-old Las Vegas man was killed in a three-vehicle crash about 11:55 p.m. Sunday in the southwestern valley, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Nelson Earl Bernardo of Las Vegas was driving a white 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck westbound on Blue Diamond Road, also called State Route 160, near El Capitan Way the highway patrol said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2007 Toyota Corolla was stopped northbound on El Capitan at the intersection of Blue Diamond while a black 2000 Ford Explorer traveling east on Blue Diamond approached El Capitan, the highway patrol said.

The Toyota Corolla's driver failed to yield the right of way, entered the intersection and struck the right side of the Explorer. The Explorer overturned onto its top, directly into the path of the Toyota pickup, the highway patrol said.

The left front of the pickup struck the right rear of the Explorer, the highway patrol said. Bernardo was pronounced dead of his injuries at the scene by paramedics, the highway patrol said.

The accident is still under investigation. The highway patrol has investigated 45 fatal crashes this year, resulting in 50 deaths, Trooper Kevin Honea said.
