Pedestrian, 16, injured in two-vehicle crash

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 (8:16 a.m.)

A 16-year-old boy struck by a vehicle Sunday while selling newspapers at a North Las Vegas intersection is in critical but stable condition this morning, authorities said.

North Las Vegas police said the boy was injured after a silver Dodge Durango was eastbound at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday on Gowan approaching the road's intersection with Simmons. The Durango failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a blue Chevy Impala that was turning southbound at the intersection.

The impact of the collision sent the Durango in the direction of a 16-year-old boy who was getting ready to sell newspapers. The vehicle struck the boy, dragged him several feet, then caused him to go underneath the vehicle as it went up a dirt embankment, police said.

The Durango then continued forward, striking a block wall before crossing a yard and hitting a home at 3542 Simmons. Investigators said prescription drugs are believed to have played a role in the crash.

Authorities said the boy was taken to University Medical Center hospital in extreme critical condition. Police this morning said the boy was in critical but stable condition.

Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to call CrimeStoppers at 385-5555.
