Inventor’s tour ends with a thud

Fri, Aug 8, 2008 (2 a.m.)

When we last saw Scott Bonge, he was heading out of town to further promote his GoateeSaver, the device that promises perfectly trimmed front-and-center facial hair.

Now comes word that his planned 8,000-mile trek came to an abrupt end late Wednesday.

His 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid was hit and dragged for about 50 feet by an 18-wheel tanker truck outside Visalia, Calif.

“I don’t know what kind of tanker it was,” Bonge said by phone Thursday. “But my suspicion is that it may have been milk.”

The Little Rock, Ark.-based inventor was profiled in Thursday’s Sun for both his goatee shaving guide and his 30-state tour to inspire others with his dream of success.

Bonge said he felt fine on the day of the crash but woke up with a painfully stiff back. His car, however, will need at least three weeks in a Fresno auto shop. In the meantime, the GoateeSaver trek is postponed while Bonge flies back to Arkansas.

“I’ve driven my tail off for the last five or six days,” Bonge said, “but sometimes you’ve just got to be adjustable.”

Like his GoateeSaver.
