Letter to the editor:

U.S. has used its power responsibly

Tue, Aug 12, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)

Michael Pravica wrote in his Wednesday letter to the editor: “No conflict was ever resolved solely by military force but instead by patient diplomacy, respect for all humanity and rebuilding trust.”

Throughout history the stronger have destroyed the opposition unless it was allowed to surrender and pay tribute. Think of the Egyptian empires, the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire. In the United States, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War were fought to surrender, and let’s not forget World War II. No diplomacy, just win or lose by military force with an occasional tie. Check your history books.

The United States has been the only superpower for the past 20 years. It should get much credit for not trying to conquer the world with its military. The United States just fought a few rogue states, under both Democrats and Republicans, with the goal of keeping the world safe for democracy.

Unfortunately, when we use restraint in battle, the opposition has found the strategy of defeating our country by waiting until we surrender because of lack of resolve.
