Motorcyclist killed in collision identified

A motorcyclist killed in a collision with a pickup truck on Saturday in North Las Vegas has been identified as 27-year-old Cody Gene Herring of North Las Vegas.

The crash led to the evacuation of several nearby businesses after authorities discovered a military explosive TNT container beneath the motorcycle after the crash, which occurred in the intersection of West Craig Road and Fuselier Street, North Las Vegas Police spokesman Mark Hoyt said.

North Las Vegas police said officers responded to the crash about 11:20 a.m. Saturday, Hoyt said.

Investigators determined that the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Craig in the middle lane when a 57-year-old driver of a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup made a left turn and entered the travel lane of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was thrown from the motorcycle and struck the right side of the truck, officers said.

The pickup truck driver had blood drawn and the accident is still under investigation, Hoyt said today.

Herring was taken to University Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.

At about 2 p.m., authorities investigating the crash found the TNT container underneath the motorcycle. Because of a threat of explosion, police said, several businesses in the area were evacuated while the Las Vegas Fire Department's bomb squad investigated the container.

The container was determined to be an authentic, but empty, military TNT container. Those who evacuated area businesses were allowed to return about 3:15 p.m.
