U.S. stay in Iraq not like in Germany

If American troops are stationed in Iraq for the next 50 years, as President Bush and John McCain advocate, it will be different for them than it has been for the troops stationed in Germany over the past 60 years.

The tens of thousands of friends and relatives of Iraqis killed in the war, which we started, will never forgive Americans and will be happy to kill one if they get a chance. How would we have felt if Japan had won World War II and built bases here?

One of the benefits of invading Iraq was being able to move troops stationed in Saudi Arabia to permanent bases in Iraq. This would make Osama bin Laden happy.

But we are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages in or a security fence around our bases in Saudi Arabia. Arabs must be allowed free access to these bases, which must have been helpful to the terrorists who bombed our barracks there.

President Bush often talks of protecting the American people. Members of our military are American people, too.
