From the Press Box:

Boulder City High has storied success

Fri, Aug 22, 2008 (midnight)

A new school year is almost here and that means a new group of athletes and teams are gearing up and getting ready to leave their mark at Boulder City High.

So, I have a little project for current, past and future athletes and anyone else that might be interested.

Walk into the school’s gymnasium and look up on the walls. Now, start counting all the state championships.

Boulder City has won 93 team state championships since opening in 1941. Yes, that is correct — 93.

Only Reno High has won more state titles with 123. Then again, Reno’s date of establishment is listed as 1879. Lowry High is a distant third with 61 and Las Vegas High is fourth with 56 state titles, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book.

“It gives all of our teams, from girls golf to football and baseball, something to strive for,” Boulder City Athletic Director Regina Quintero said. “Our student-athletes can walk into the gym and see all those state banners and have something to work for.”

In 67 years of existence there have only been 26 years where the school did not win any state championships, and since 1995 there’s only been two years the school went without a championship.

There was a state title drought from the fall of 1968 to the spring of 1975, but that ended when the boys tennis, volleyball, boys basketball, baseball and both track teams won titles in the 1975-76 school year. Since then, there have only been four years (1993-94, 1994-95, 1997-1998 and 2006-07) where there’s not been any championships.

Things change in nearly 70 years and it’s no different for high school sports. There are a lot more schools now, different sports, the competition level is higher, but those things have all made sports better, by improving the quality of our current athletes.

Not to put any pressure on anyone or any team, but there is a tradition of success and championships at Boulder City High.

It is possible that the school’s 100th state title could come within the next nine months.

I don’t think it’s likely, because the school has not won more than two state titles in a school year since 1991-92 when football, boys golf, softball and boys track all claimed titles, but this year could be different.

I’ve put the challenge out there — get championship No. 100. Now let’s see who steps up and good luck.
