A chance of thunderstorms lingers for the Las Vegas Valley today after yesterday afternoon's storms brought lightning, thunder, rain and penny-sized hail to western Henderson and downtown Las Vegas, the National Weather Service said.
Las Vegas firefighters reported penny-sized hail at Commerce Street and Main Street as well as a tree struck by lightning in the downtown area Monday.
Temperatures dropped into the 70s overnight, but a warming trend is on the way, the weather service said.
Forecasts for heat are running 3 to 8 degrees above normal, putting Las Vegas and even Death Valley at a possible hot start to the three-day Labor Day weekend.
Death Valley never has registered 125 degrees after Aug. 18, the weather service noted, but it is predicted that Thursday and Friday the temperature could get close, reaching 123 degrees there. In Las Vegas, the heat could run 106 to 108 degrees for those two days, the weather service said.
At this time of year, Las Vegas forecasters issue an excessive heat warning if the daytime temperature reaches 108 degrees, and the weather service is watching for that possibility through this week.
Another taste of southwestern monsoons is on tap for Saturday through the holiday weekend, the weather service said.
There's a chance of isolated to scattered thunderstorms in Southern Nevada, Arizona and Southern California, especially on Sunday, forecasters said.
