Wed, Aug 27, 2008 (5:51 p.m.)

An 11-year-old girl was seriously injured today when she was struck by a large commercial dump truck in Henderson, according to police.

The Del Webb Middle School student was walking westbound on Summit Grove Drive and tried to cross at Eastern Avenue about 2:50 p.m. when the accident happenned, police said.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the child was not in a crosswalk and was walking against a traffic light.

A large truck driven by 30-year-old Brandon Gorman of Las Vegas was heading northbound on Eastern and was unable to avoid colliding with the girl, police said.

The child was taken to the University Medical Center trauma unit by a paramedic unit with the Henderson Fire Department. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but they are serious.

Speed was not a factor in the accident, police said. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be involved and no citations or arrests have been made at this time, police said.
