Las Vegas Valley temperatures warming up

Wed, Aug 27, 2008 (7 a.m.)

A cold pool of air over the Las Vegas Valley, compliments of Monday's thunderstorms, dampened the chance for a repeat performance on Tuesday.

High temperatures Tuesday ranged from the mid 90s to upper 90s from the Las Vegas Valley to the Nevada Test Site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, where it was 97 degrees at 4 p.m., compared to 95 degrees here in the valley.

Heat becomes the major character for the next few days with daytime highs nearing 106 degrees or higher, the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters will issue an excessive heat warning at this time of year if the temps reach 108 degrees or higher.

For the weekend, southwestern monsoons may sneak into the valley from the southeast by Saturday, but there is a possibility that a system moving in from the Pacific Northwest could put a damper on future moisture.

Weather service forecasters said that if the heat without thunderstorm threats remain in place, the area may be under a wildland fire weather watch for the three-day Labor Day weekend.
