Special dinner planned for Sept. 11

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 (3:29 p.m.)

September kicks off a very busy fall and winter schedule for Post 31. Highlights for September will be the annual Patriots Day potluck dinner at Legion Hall on the infamous day of Sept. 11 and the annual Post 31 Golf Tourney on Sept. 6.

An objective of the dinner is to honor the victims and the heroes of that day and to pay tribute to our own Boulder City police and firemen who stand ready to protect us at times of stress in our own lives. It is also the "early bird" thank you gathering for those members who re-upped in Post 31 on time and without calls, pleas and threats from the adjutant.

Commander Doug McHam sent letters of invitation to both Police Chief Thomas Finn and Fire Chief Kevin Nicholson. The letter read, "It would be an honor to have you and your personnel and their immediate families attend."

The doors to Legion Hall will be open at 6 p.m. and dinner, potluck style, will be served shortly thereafter. We will be serving burgers, hot dogs, barbecued beans, cake and all the attendant fixin's and beverages that go with them.

Both members and auxiliary are combining to recognize our police and firemen through remembering the heroics of Sept. 11, 2001, by the police and firemen of the New York area where so many gave their lives in service to their fellow man.

Boulder City residents should remember to fly their flags at half-staff that day, from sunrise to sunset. Flags should also be flown on Sept. 1, Labor Day.

The golf tournament is only $80 per person for green fees, cart, lunch and prizes. In addition, you can buy mulligans. You can cheat on your score as much as your pocketbook allows. Chairman Howard Scott says there are still spots open, so call him at 293-3711 and make your reservation before it's too late.

The regular monthly meeting of Post 31 will be held on Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. Final plans will be made for the Sept. 11 dinner as well as conducting the regular business of the post. It is hoped there will be a good turnout to help us prepare for this annual goodwill get-together with others who also serve.

On Sept. 10 the Unit 31 Auxiliary meets at 2 p.m. and Rebekah meets at 7 p.m. Both organizations meet at Legion Hall.

Sept. 14 is POW/MIA Recognition Day. Fly your flag on this day to remember the men and women of our armed forces who are still held as prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action from one of our national conflicts.

Sept. 18, 1947, is the day the United States Air Force was established. We did not have such a force during World War II. Both the Army and Navy had air power, but after that conflict it was realized that air warfare had become so important in modern conflicts that a separate branch of the armed forces was needed.

Adjutant Joe Bowyer reports that Post 31 has nine yellow ribbon signs of service personnel who are no longer serving and whose signs have been taken down from Memorial Drive posts to make room for new recruits. Relatives of these veterans can pick up the signs at Legion Hall as mementos by calling 293-6374 and leaving a message.

The nine are PFC Hans Borklund, PFC Nathan Bolton, SA Garrett Castro, SSG Jonathan Fields, DCSN Charles Francis, PO2 Christopher Shepard, PFC Ryan Spengler, SGT Travis Weisler, SP3 Julie Wilkinson.

Remember Thursday mornings. Your friends at Post 31 will be at Legion Hall from 7-9 partaking of coffee and goodies. See you there.
