LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Divisive force exits presidential race

Sat, Feb 9, 2008 (2 a.m.)

I sincerely hope that at least one Republican was shocked by Mitt “I Hate to Lose” Romney’s speech this week in which he announced he was “suspending” his campaign for the Republican nomination. It was interesting that he couldn’t bring himself to say that he was quitting because Sen. John McCain was whipping him from coast to coast.

Romney said, “I entered this race because I love America.” Shortly after that he said, “Frankly, in this time of war I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.” So the candidate who said he loves America just said that anyone who voted for a Democrat was “surrendering to terror.”

Richard Nixon had an enemies list, but only about 200 people were on it. Romney just announced that at least half the nation was on his list of suspects.

During the McCarthy hearings on the Army, Sen. Joseph McCarthy was asked, “Have you no shame, Sir? Have you no shame?” I truly feel that same question could be asked of Romney today. The same question could be asked of the partisans who cheered his comments.

It would be an understatement to call the speech sleazy and disingenuous. From foreign policy to immigration to the institution of marriage to faith (we have too little and the jihadists have too much), Mr. Romney was swinging wildly.

One might expect this garbage from Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, but I found it frightening that someone who wanted to lead the entire nation would make such claims.

I, for one, hope that Mr. Romney will quietly return to Massachusetts (wasn’t he pro-gay rights and pro-abortion rights when he ran for governor there?) and go back to making money and never again run for public office on a platform of such an intolerant and smiling anger.
