Letter to the editor:

Change the phrase ‘under God’ in pledge

Wed, Feb 20, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)

The “under God” clause in the Pledge of Allegiance seems to be the main issue, although certainly not the only issue, for individuals who decline to recite this pledge on demand and under tremendous social pressure to conform. Having to invoke one or more supernatural beings, whose existence can be neither proved nor disproved, while reciting the pledge should give every rational person pause.

This matter has two simple solutions. Either (1) return the pledge to its pre-Eisenhower-era version, or (2) replace “under God” with “under the Constitution.” The latter seems to me to be preferable as it would serve to teach young people learning the pledge that there is something real underlying our freedoms.
