LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Blame criminals, not the NRA, for crime

Sat, Feb 23, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)

Regarding Sandra Hanson’s Friday letter condemning guns and the National Rifle Association:

Ms. Hanson states, “If we didn’t have guns, we wouldn’t need guns!” I agree! We would then all be using slings and rocks, archery equipment or cutlery to acquire untainted food and defend ourselves from attacks.

One could also say that if we didn’t have motor vehicles, no one would die as a result of a motor vehicle accident. If we didn’t have airplanes, no one would die as a result of an aircraft crash.

People need to grow up and pull their heads out of the sand. The fact is that there are guns in the world and no amount of complaining and hand-wringing is going to change that.

It is not the fault of the NRA (of which I am a member) that guns exist or that criminals use them to kill people. The NRA did not invent guns nor does it manufacture them. Guns exist to help protect the rights of law-abiding citizens — so we can protect ourselves and, if we so choose, harvest wild game to help feed our families.

Just remember: If you are unable to protect yourself, sooner or later you will be a victim, because the police can’t be everywhere.
