Letter to the editor:

Valor doesn’t make McCain fit for office

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 (2:03 a.m.)

My brother-in-law was captured during the invasion of Guam in World War II and remained a prisoner until the end of the war. We revere his sacrifice during that period and were honored and cheered at his homecoming. But neither he, nor any of our family, considered that tenure to be criterion for the office of president of the United States.

John McCain has defined himself by his Vietnam POW experience, just as Rudy Giuliani defined himself by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. These are heroic circumstances of their lives, not qualifications for president.
